Being vegan in Queenstown is easy but it’s even better at Lord of the Fries Queenstown as they serve everything vegan.

It’s a chain with stores in both Aussie and NZ, but this will be about my experience at the Queenstown store.

Having been a little bit disappointed by the Lord of the Fries burger in Wellington, I was interested to see how my experience would be at the Queenstown store.

They’ve a food truck set up in Queenstown compared to a store along the popular Cuba Street in Wellington.

The Queenstown location is great, close to the Tiki Trail and the gondola.

I visited on a weekday afternoon, just after lunch and started scanning the menu.

The menu is laid out in a typical fast food store style with a board above the counter. As usual I find that there are so many options when they menu is laid out like this it can get a bit confusing.

That said, you can always look at the menu online in advance, which does list all of the ingredients and allergens in each burger.

Anyway, I decided to go with the Big Spicy burger (beef patty, cheese, onion and lettuce topped with a Tobasco tomato sauce, jalapenos and chilli mayo).

Cost? $12.90.

The burger sizes are mini, big, and premium. The mini and big options come with a veg beef patty, and the premium comes with a Byond Meat patty. I don’t like the price point of Beyond Meat patties yet, but if you’re yet to try one, you may as well do it here.

the lord of the fries buzzer

They give you a buzzer/beeper thing that’ll alert you when your order is ready. I’m not sure if you’re supposed to, but people seemed to be taking a seat on the picnic benches next door so that’s what I did as I waited.

After about 15 minutes, my burger was ready. This felt like a long time given the store wasn’t busy…but also is a good sign they make the burgers from scratch. So if there’s a queue, be prepared for a long wait time.

The burger is wrapped up in the traditional fast food style, and you’re given a napkin. There’s no ‘dine in’ option. There’s a spot to eat the burger across the road in the trees, or you can use the picnic benches next door.

LORD OF THE FRIES QUEENSTOWN – BURGER TASTING NOTES

  • The burger construction? Perfect. The patty was on the bottom with the cheese, than the lettuce and the other toppings were at the top.
  • The patty was delicious…I didn’t feel like I missed out by not getting the Beyond Meat option.
  • The lettuce, despite overflowing the burger, kept the rest of the toppings from falling out of the burger.
  • It wasn’t what I’d call a big burger. Unless you’ve got a small apetite, avoid getting the mini burger.
  • It would be easy enough to eat on the move without things getting messy.
  • The spice was definitely present without being crazy.

Overall, it was a good burger! At $12.90 it is on the cheaper side of burgers in Queenstown (even without chips). Given they’ve got a minimalist setup it’s a fair price. I wouldn’t want to pay more.

The best time to get a burger from Lord of the Fries Queenstown would be after finishing up at the Skyline (or you’ve completed the Ben Lomond Track) and want to grab some naughty food to take back to your accommodation.

Provided they’re not super busy.

Lord of the Fries Queenstown is at 27 Brecon Street, Queenstown 9300 (it’s not on Google Maps).
