Mexican in Wanaka? There’s a couple of great options, but if you’re looking for your classic Mexican restaurant experience, head to Amigos…check out the view.

Amigos is fun! They have five locations, but so far I’ve only been to the Amigos Wanaka (several times)…they offer some good vouchers which I’ll mention at the bottom of the post.

At Amigos Wanaka there’s plenty of space both inside and out. You can’t argue with the outside seating with great view towards the ridgeline overlooking Wanaka (you can hike there via the Skyline Track).

Here’s my experience from dining at the Wanaka Amigos.

THE FUN ATMOSPHERE

I’ve been to Amigos Wanaka a few times now and every time it’s a blast. In the evening you’d expect a lively atmoshere, but I’ve been there for lunch and there was still an atmosphere there with a few tables of people.

Perhaps it’s the music they’ve got palying too. I do like the option of being able to sit outside as well if things are too loud. On a summers evening, it’s a treat.

There’s not too much seating outside, so it’s not a bad idea to reserve one in advance if that’s your plan.

The staff at Amigos are great. THey’re all onto it whether it’s busy or quiet…they’ll make sure you’re you’ve got there full attention when they’re talking with you. When you arrive and wait to be seated, let them know if you’ve got any dietary requirements they’ll get you a menu that covers the majority of these.

THE AMIGOS FOOD

Mexican food is one of my top three favourite cuisines. I wouldn’t complain about tacos on the daily.

The menu at Amigos is a pretty typical of a Mexican restaurant in New Zealand, but they execute things well.

I’ve had the hearty burrito and a few of the different tacos. As a vegan, I found there was more than enough options, and friends were surpirsed by how good the burrito was!

Side Note: The Burrito Craft Food Truck does an epic burrito too.

If you’re like me and tend to like bigger meals, I’d opt for the burrito instead of three tacos (ask the staff what are the most filling meals if need be). And make sure they bring over a variety of hot sauces for flavour.

Everyone else had a great meal. I’ve never met someone who didn’t enjoy their meal at Amigos…yet.

p.s. SIGN UP TO THE AMIGOS NEWSLETTER

If you’ve never been to Amigos before, sign up to their newsletter and you’ll get a $10 voucher you can use (with no minimum spend).

The newsletters (which come about once a month) are worth browsing to as you’ll get some exclusive deals, and you’ll get a voucher for your birthday too.

Not bad Amigos, not bad!

Overall, if you’re after some Mexican food in the South Island, give Amigos Wanaka a visit. It’s a goodie, a great spot to head after doing one of the hikes/walks around Wanaka.

There are places in Queenstown where you can get Mexican too such as Margos, El Camino, Taco Medic, and the Caribe Latin Kitchen.
