I’ve created this page to acknowledge Chur New Zealand’s pledge to follow the Tiaki Promise and take care for New Zealand.
You can check out the official site here. If you stick around to read below, I’ll discuss what the Tiaki New Zealand program is, what it means, and what you should do.
The full version of the Tiaki promise is:
While travelling in New Zealand I will:
Care for land, sea and nature, treading lightly and leaving no trace.
Travel safely, showing care and consideration for all.
Respect culture, travelling with an open heart and mind.
To uphold the promise you’ll:
1. Drive Carefully
2. Be Prepared
3. Show Respect
4. Protect Nature
5. Keep NZ Clean
2. Be Prepared
3. Show Respect
4. Protect Nature
5. Keep NZ Clean
You can do that, yea?
Of course, you can, but if you have some skin in the game you’ll take things seriously.
Make the effort to and sign and download the Tiaki Promise on an image from the bottom of the Tiaki page. Don’t feel like you need to share the image. If you want to, cool but do this for yourself.
Get skin in the game before you arrive in New Zealand.
This is a small barrier, but that’s why it’s so great. By acknowledging your intent1, you’ve activated something. If you respect yourself, you’ll follow through on your promise as the definition of intent is your plan to follow through on something.
A LITTLE INFO ON THE TIAKI PROMISE
What does Tiaki mean in Maori2?
Verb: to guard, keep.
Noun: looking after, protection, safeguarding.
This translates into the motto: Tiaki – Care for New Zealand.
The Tiaki New Zealand website was launched on the 1st of November, 2018 thanks to the combined effort the these seven companies:
- Air New Zealand
- Tourism New Zealand
- Department of Conservation
- Tourism Industry Aotearoa
- Local Government New Zealand
- New Zealand Māori Tourism
- Tourism Holdings Ltd
The Tiaki promise was the first initiative they’ve launched.
With New Zealand becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination, the pressure on all resources is going to increase. The idea is that the Tiaki Promise creates awareness around this, and we’ll all do our part to keep NZ as precious as it is.
I’m sure that we’ll make mistakes here and there that don’t uphold the promise, no one is perfect. And no one is saying that.
Our intention now, tomorrow, and in the future is to consider the Tiaki Promise principles going forward, will you join us?
If so, make sure to head to TiakiNewZealand.com and scroll to the bottom and make your pledge today.
